MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): Unknown gunmen have blown up and destroyed a renowned shrine in the capital of central Maidan Wardak province, officials and residents said on Sunday.

The 50-year-old shrine of Mullah, was destroyed with explosives last night, a resident of Maidan Shahr, Amir Mohammad, said.

He said a large number of people infected by various diseases daily visited the tomb to obtain amulets from the custodians of the shrine — grandsons of Mullah Kaka.

Another resident of the city, Ainullah Haqbin, also confirmed the shrine had been blown up.

“Everyone who visited the shrine has returned healthy by the grace of Allah, but the centre of prayer and blessing was completely destroyed by unknown individuals.”

The governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, said security forces had launched their investigation to determine who were involved in the incident.

Mullah Kaka shrine, better known as Banaras, is located in Ziarat village and has a history of 50 years.
