Stage set for commemorating 10th of Muharram

KABUL Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PEUH).

Imam Hussain Ibn Ali was martyred along with 72 companions by the tyrannical forces of Yazid in the Iraqi city of Karbala during the Karbala Battle in 680 CE. Hussain laid down his life to uphold the supremacy of Islam.

In Afghanistan, the day is marked every year with recitation from the Quran in mosques, gatherings and processions by Shiite mourners on well-guarded routes to pay tribute to the sacrifice of the prophet’s grandson.

On the 7th, 9th and 10th day of the first Islamic calendar month, Shiites beat themselves with chains, but some scholars of the sect say the practice called self-flagellation is un-Islamic. The Shias also set up roadside stalls offering people milk and tea.

Meanwhile, a security blanket has been thrown over Kabul to ensure the day is marked in a peaceful way. Security has been beefed up around mosques and places where Muharram  gathering are to take place, officials say.
