KABUL (Pajhwok): Kabul and New Delhi conferred on ways of boosting bilateral cooperation in areas of defence and security, an Indian newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Deccan Herald said Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar and Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai met in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss subjects of mutual interest.

The second senior Ashraf Ghani administration official to visit India within a week, Hekmat Karzai arrived in New Delhi on Monday.

Before his arrival, National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar held talks with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval on regional security, particularly terrorism, which threatened peace in the region.

Jaishankar and Karzai led their delegations during consultations at the foreign office in Delhi. They reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to increase their engagements.

New Delhi’s development assistance to Afghanistan was the focus of discussions, according to the daily, which said the two sides explored possibilities of taking India’s support to Afghan National Defence and Security Forces beyond training and supply of non-lethal weapons.

It added the back-to-back trips by Atmar and Karzai signalled the Afghan government’sreadiness to reverse its policy of heavy reliance on Pakistan insurgents.
