LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Taliban official said on Monday.

Abdul Mateen Jafar, the provincial acting education director, told Pajhwok Afghan News 51 schools had been closed in central parts of the province due to insecurity, driving 31,000 students out of school.

However, he said the Taliban had allowed schools in areas under their control to be reopened.

The schools had been closed in Lashkargah, Nad Ali, Greshk and Marja districts, he said, adding they would be reopened during the ongoing week.

“We are trying to reach an understanding with Taliban on reopening the rest of schools,” he said.

“We are happy over the reopening of our schools,” a student of eighth grade in Nad Ali, Burhanuddin, said.

A Taliban official, who wanted to be unnamed, said they were not against education and did not close the schools.

“Taliban mean students, we are supporters of schools, but there are some other issues we are opposed to,” he said.
