ASADABAD/QALAT (Pajhwok): Dozens of tribal elders on Thursday attended a gathering announcing their support for the Afghan security forces, as elsewhere 100 policemen completed training in southern Zabul province, officials said.

The elders from Shegal and Shultan districts of Kunar said they were ready to send their sons to join the security forces.

“Shegal is a peaceful district where schools are open and the residents support the government and security personnel,” a tribal elder from the town, Ali Rahman, told the gathering.

“We are ready to send more youth to join the security forces,” he said, adding most of the youth from the district worked with security forces.

A tribal elder from the recently created Shultan district previously part of Shegal district, Ajab Khan, asked the government to construct building for the headquarters of the new district.

“Many security incidents occur in our district for being lying near the Durand Line,” he said, adding they were ready to support the security forces.

Kunar governor Wahidullah Kalimzai said he had started visiting district centres to meet tribal elders in order to narrow the gap between the people and the government through talks with them. He asked the people of both districts to cooperate with the government in establishing peace and support their security forces.

Separately, 100 policemen graduated from a six-week training they underwent at the Police Training Centre in Zabul province.

The graduates were trained how to handle legal and criminal cases and on war tactics and theology, police chief Maj. Gen. Mirwais Noorzai said. The policemen would be deployed in districts they came from, he said.
