JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Islamic State, also known as Daesh, and other militant groups would be weakened this winter, the acting defence minister promised on Saturday.

Masoom Stanikzai held out the promise during a well-attended public meeting at the governor’s office in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

He told the gathering, attended by government officials and tribal elders, the winter security strategy envisaged an offensive against Daesh and other fighters in Nangarhar.

The acting minister vowed to equip the security personnel in the province with sophisticated weapons, in addition to being provided with air support.

Stanikzai said all necessary arrangements, including equipment, for deploying the Afghan Local Police (ALP) force to Nangarhar. The provincial police headquarters will receive the equipment soon.

Security enforcement is a joint responsibility of the government and people, according to Stanikzai, who assured Nangarhar residents of a positive change in the situation.

He promised to share Nangarhar’s problems with President Ashraf Ghani and the National Security Council.

Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi said the residents of the province stoutly supported their security forces. He also praised the security forces’ campaign against Daesh and other insurgent outfits.
