Abdullah denounces Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

KABUL, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah said the invaders of the past and today were equally responsible for crimes under different names.

The sixth of Jadi of Afghan calendar (Sunday) marks the 36th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

A 120,000-strong red army, equipped with sophisticated weaponry, invaded Afghanistan and installed Babrak Karmal as president of the country.

The invasion was followed by uprisings in various parts of the country, triggering a war that lasted ten-long years and resulted in the Soviet Union’s biggest defeat and subsequent disintegration.

During the invasion, Afghanistan turned into rubble. More than one million people got killed, thousands maimed, and another five million migrated to neighboring Iran and Pakistan.

On the Russian side more than 14450 soldiers were killed and 49980 others wounded and 330 went missing during more than a decade of war.

“The people of Afghanistan had never surrendered to any force and stood against invaders and attackers on the country,” a statement from the CEO office said.

“It was a clear intervention of the Red Army in our country. The attack destroyed our security and safety for years and turned our country into a place full of crisis and insecurity,” Abdullah said in the statement.

Since that day (when the war began), he said, the former Soviet Union violated all political and humanity borders by attacking Afghanistan and committing genocide of Afghans.

The invasion was not only on Afghanistan territory but on the faith of the Afghan people, but the Afghan nation stood against them and defeated the super power with their sacrifices, it concluded.
