Gilani being tipped as new head of High Peace Council

KABUL, a well-placed source revealed on Wednesday.

The government is yet to fill the slot that fell vacant after Salahuddin Rabbani was made foreign minister a year ago. Then HPC secretary Masoom Stanikzai looked after the council’s affairs for some time before being chosen as defence minister.

Earlier, the National Security Council (NSC) decided to appoint Qanuni as the government’s chief peace negotiator. But some jihadi and political parties took issue with plans for his appointment.
