KABUL (Pajhwok): The Kabul Servants Institute (KSI) on Thursday set the government a 10-day deadline to appoint a new mayor for capital Kabul, otherwise they would launch a protest campaign.

Former Kabul mayor Mohammad Younis Nawandish resigned in December, 2014 and an acting mayor had been running the municipality’s affairs until resigning a month ago.

The KSI members demanded the appointment of a new mayor in a speedy manner and expressed their concern about the vacant post since a month.

Bashir Bezan, deputy head of the KSI, said: “The current natural environment situation in Kabul is terrible and there is no authority to respond to public concerns.”

He said it had been more than a year since the unity government came into power, but both the leaders had failed to appoint a mayor for the city of over six million people.

The KSI members also expressed deep concern over growing incidents of insecurity, saying previously most secure places of the city had become the dangerous ones.
