70 tonnes of expired medicine, food set alight in Jalalabad

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Seventy tonnes of expired medicine and food items were set alight in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday, officials said.

He said a joint commission comprised of officials from different government departments were present on the occasion. “Twenty tonnes of spurious drugs and 50 tonnes of expired eatables were torched.”

Seventy percent of medicine supplies reach Nangarhar from Kabul, the director said. “We don’t check the drugs coming from Kabul. Police seize them at the Daronta checkpoint.

Kamal warned of cancelling the licences of some Jalalabad-based private hospitals that failed to offer satisfactory services. However, he neither named the health facilities nor gave their number.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the departments concerned had been directed to crack down on the sale of substandard items.

He said: “The governor has ordered checking of medicine at customs stations before their supply to the market.” At least 200 tonnes of such items were burnt last year.
