IEC unveils detailed results from 2014 presidential polls

KABUL) announced detailed results from the 2014 presidential elections on Wednesday, one and a half years after the national unity government was formed in Kabul.

The first round of the presidential vote was held on April 5, but it produced no clear winner and the election went to a runoff stage between then two top-vote getters Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf  Ghani.

The runoff election took place on June 14 2014, but the results had to be delayed due to widespread allegations of fraud, triggering a political standoff.

However, the IEC finally partially announced the results on September 21, 2014, declaring Ashraf Ghani as the winner.

IEC chief Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani on September 21 declared Ghani as the winner based on vote percentages at a press conference.

However, Abdullah, the runner up, was appointed as the government Chief Executive Officer (CEO) under an agreement between the two candidates.

Nuristani had said the difference in percentage of votes had been shared with both the candidates and details of the result would be shared with the media later.

Nuristani on Wednesday announced the detailed results of 2014 election during a press conference in Kabul. He said the results’ announcement was delayed to protect national interest and respect the agreement between the two candidates.

He said Ashraf Ghani had won 39, 35,567 votes or 55.27 percent of the total votes cast in the second round election in 2014. Abdullah had won 31, 85,018 votes or 44.73 percent of the total ballots, Nuristani added.

Pajhwok Afghan News had published the same statistics about the second round of election in 2014.

IEC chief said 22,828 polling stations had been set up nationwide with 9,677 of them supervised by national and international observers.

He added the votes of 1,098 stations had been declared void by the IEC and 108 other stations by the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).
