Taliban defeated in Helmand, asserts Chief of Army Staff

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): During his visit to southern Helmand province, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qadam Shah Saheem said on Monday the security personnel had defeated the militants who would be unable to carry out spring attacks there.

A delegation from the Ministries of Defence and Interior, led by Gen. Shaheem, visited Helmand for assessing the security situation in the province.

According Shaheem, they have established six more battalions, resolved the problems of air force and improved coordination between Afghan forces and foreign advisors in the province.

“We also stationed some units of special forces who consecutively attack on militants in Helmand,” he said.

While responding to a query, he said that the numbers of security personnel have been increased, so Taliban could not carry out their spring attacks in the province.

However, a member of provincial council, Ataullah Afghan, said that similar delegations had already came to the province with no positive result.

Another member of the council, Baryalay Nazari, said increasing numbers of soldiers could not improve security of the province, if there is week management.

There were still ghost soldiers of security forces, so the problem has to be addressed and the key officials of security forces should be transferred from the province.
