KABUL’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has discussed with officials of the Northwest General Hospital problems being faced by Afghan patients.

The Afghanistan Consulate in Peshawar in a statement said Consul General Dr. Abdullah Wahid Poyan on Monday held a meeting with the Northwest hospital director Prof. Tariq and discussed with him problems of Afghan patients.

Poyan said some persons in the hospital in the name of translators were taking huge money from Afghan patients and ambulances taking Afghan patients from Torkham border crossing to the hospital charged heavy fares.

Poyan urged the Northwest hospital officials to assist poor Afghan patients. He also demanded the appointment of a representative of the Afghan Consulate in the hospital, residing facilities for visitors and paving the ground for teaching facilities to Afghan medical students.

All his demands were accepted by Prof. Tariq who said Afghan patients instead of ambulances would be brought to the hospital from Torkham in a bus.  He also agreed to opening of the Afghan consulate’s representative office in the hospital and closely looking into problems faced by Afghan patients.

Prof. Tariq said poor Afghan patients would be assisted from the hospital’s assistance fund and Afghan medial students would be provided practical learning facilities.

Poyan visited the Northwest General Hospital, a 220 bedded state-of-the-art hospital in Hayatabad township, at a time when many Afghan patients have been complaining about problems they face at the hospital.

Farid Ahmad Ahmadi, an Afghan, wrote on his Facebook wall that “butchers are sitting in the Northwest (hospital), robbing money from Afghan patients.”

He further wrote the hospital was selling its cool breeze, glass works and beautiful building on Afghan patients instead of treating them well.

Hina Sadat, another Facebook user, said Afghan patients were the main source of income for the hospital and therefore Afghan patients should be provided more and better facilities.
