KABUL (Pajhwok): The Pentagon has disciplined more than a dozen US military personnel but brought no criminal charges against anyone for the errors that led to the bombing of a medical charity in northern Kunduz province.
At least 42 people were killed and dozens wounded in the October 2015 airstrike the Doctors Without Borders facility in the provincial capital, an attack that drew harsh criticism from the Paris-based organisation and the UN.
Letters of reprimand issued to some personnel may impede their promotion.The punishmentsare largely administrative, according to the Associated Press (AP), which said the military had previously suspended some personnel from their duties.
Following a string of calls for an independent investigation into the bombing, President Barack Obama apologised for the attack and the former US military commander in Afghanistan called the action inappropriate. Payments were offered to more than 140 affectedfamilies and individuals.
Meanwhile, the Doctors Without Borders refused to comment on disciplinary actions until the Department of Defence communicates its decisions directly to the group or makes a public announcement.
