KABUL Independent Election Commission (AIEC) members.

However, it underlined the need for the commissioners’ voluntary resignation for the sake of reforms in the country’s electoral system.

The president office welcomed the resignation of the AIEC chief, Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani, saying the move would facilitate reforms in the electoral system.

On Saturday, Nuristani tendered his resignation to President Ashraf Ghani, who approved the letter. Nuristani has been heading the electoral body since Aug. 03, 2013.

Deputy spokesman of Presidential Palace, Zafar Hashimi, acknowledged the government could not fire the commissioners in accordance with the relevant law.

Voluntary resignations were needed to ensure cleaning up the electoral system.“The resignation move will enable the selection committee to commence its work,” he hoped.
