SHARAN (Pajhwok): A police officer shot himself to death after killing his wife in Sharan, the capital of southeastern Paktika province, on Monday, an official said.

An eyewitness, wishing not to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News the police officer riding a motorcycle along with his wife stopped in the central square of the city.

He said the officer shot his wife and then himself to death in the morning. The motive behind the shooting was yet to be known, the source said.

The deputy police chief for Mata Khan district confirmed the incident and identified the police officer as Ghulam Khan. He said the officer had served in the force for 10 years in Paktika.

A relative of the officer, who wished not to be named, said the woman killed was involved in immoral activities. She had also previously served in the police force.

The source said immoral activities of the woman had forced her husband to take the extreme step. Khan had married the woman three years ago.
