Mother of slain cop struggles with poverty-ridden life

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A mother, who lost her police son to a roadside bombing three years ago in western Herat province, has since been struggling to meet even petty needs of her family.

The mother, Zahra Gul, says her son made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland but now they led a poverty-ridden life and not having much to eat.

Gul’s son Hafizullah had been in police for years and was killed three years back on his way to Engil district in a roadside bombing.

As the World Mother’s Day has recently passed, Zahra said like her there were dozens of mothers the government was not inquiring about their social and economic situation.

She said she had to look after her five children her son left behind and it was a heavy burden for her to lift. “I have to work at different homes day and night to find something for my grandchildren to eat.”

She said they had gone to beds may times at night without eating and woke up in the morning without eating anything.

She lamented the Ministry of Labour and Martyrs was giving her 36,000 afghanis after every three years, which was not enough to meet her family’s needs.
