KABUL’s first deputy speaker Zahir Qadir on Sunday said uprising forces had blocked the Islamic State or Daesh militant group’s advance in eastern Nangarhar province.

The lawmaker was addressing tribal elders from the Khogyani district in Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar. Qadir said he and his friends had decisively fought against Daesh militants and had prevented them from finding a foothold.

He said uprising forces led by him were fighting alongside the Afghan security forces against the IS and were stationed three kilometers ahead of the police and the army. He said the IS would have made gains in the absence of uprising forces.

“If there had been no uprising forces, today Daesh would have been in Ghanikhel district and Torkham,” said Qaqir, who sworn to turn Nangarhar into the graveyard of Daesh. “Curse on those who support Daesh and are associated with it.”

Qadir was speaking two days after President Ashraf Ghani, during a visit to Jalalabad on Friday, directed the Afghan forces to rout the Islamic State group.
