MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): A water dam, generating 250 megawattsof electricity, would be constructed in the power-deficient central province of Kapisa at a cost of $260 million, an official said on Sunday.

Qais Qaderi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News a technical and professional team of Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) had completed a survey in the Bagh Dara locality of Nijrab district for the construction of the dam.

He said the construction of the dam would help create work opportunities for youth besides supplying electricity to neighboring provinces. A local company had evinced an interest in executing the projected and had visited the area as well.

In addition to Kapisa, the dam would also supply power to Panjsher and Kabul provinces, according to Qaderi. He said the water of Ghorband, Salang and Panjsher Rivers could be stored in the dam and other areas for irrigating crops in the neighboring provinces.

Hussain Sanji, the Provincial Council (PC) head, claimed playing a proactive role in the construction of the dam. The national unity government had executed a number of infrastructure projects in the country, he acknowledged.

He said the construction of Bagh Dara dam in Kapisa was included in the projects and the energy minister had visited the area some time back.He hoped construction work on the facility would kick off soon.

Malik Sherin, a tribal elder, said they had complained to the government regarding the electricity issue because the province was not supplied electricity from Naghlo Dam.

He said if the dam was built and electricity was made available, factories of juices would be set up and most of youth would get jobs. Kapisa producesa huge amount of grapes, pomegranate, apple and other fresh fruits.

Currently, some areas of Kapisa are supplied electricity imported from Tajikistan but most parts of the provinces remain deprived of the facility.
