ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Local officials on Wednesday made desperate calls for reinforcements after militants launched coordinated attacks on the center of Khashrod district of northwestern Nimroz province.

Khashrod district chief, Mohammad Hasham Norzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News that militants launched attacks on the district center and nearby posts amid firing rockets.

“One civilian was killed and 11 others wounded after several rockets fired by Taliban landed in the district bazaar this morning,” he said, adding one of the injured, a child, was in critical condition.

Norzai said the Afghan forces suffered no casualties in the ongoing attacks and had no information about militants’ fatalities.

A security official, who wished not to be named, said: “Taliban attacked Khashrod district from two sides and heavy clashes are underway.”

He said the militants had reached a half kilometer close to the district center which could fall if the government did not send reinforcements in-time.

Khashrod district is located on the Zaranj-Dilaram highway that connects east of the country to the south and west.
