LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents killed five Afghan Local Police (ALP) members during an overnight attack on their post in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Friday.
The attack took place on Thursday night in Nawroz bazaar area, a security official told Pajhwok Afghan News. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the attackers took away weapons of the slain ALP members.
The Helmand governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, confirmed the incident, but said only one ALP member had been killed and three others wounded.
He said the attackers had also suffered casualties but exact figures were unknown.
While a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed the ALP post attacked last night had been captured by the fighters, killing 12 police and confiscating their weapons.
The Taliban have been in control of four districts of Helmand including Musa Qala, Nawzad, Baghran and Dishu while periodic clashes are underway in several areas including those lying close to the provincial capital, Lashkargah.
