KABUL (Pajhwok): The Supreme Court on Saturday said 119 judicial officials have so far been detained over taking bribe while 1,000 others transferred.

The apex court called reforms, creation of a court for addressing violence against women cases and the addition of three more courts as great achievements during the past 18 months.

Supreme Court spokesman Abdullah Attayee told a press conference that nine judges, 27 scriveners, a prosecutor, three defense lawyers and 79 commissioners had been detained over bribery during the past 18 months.

The convicts have been referred to the attorney general office for investigation, he said. They would be sentenced to different jail terms once their crimes proved.

Replacing 659 judges and 381 scriveners in capital Kabul and a number of provinces, as well as increasing the number of courts from five to eight were other achievements of the Supreme Court in the past one and half a years, he added.

“There was no center for addressing violence against women cases in the appellant court, but it has been recently created, the special appellant court on appellant level and a separate court to address women and children cases have also been set up,” he said.

Attayee said the Chief Justice had ordered all judiciary meetings should be held publicly for better transparency.
