Nuristan PC office closed in protest against MoPW

JALALABAD CITY (Pajhwok): The Nuristan provincial council was shut on Thursday in protest against the alleged breach of promises by the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW).

Members of the provincial council said they would not reopen their office until rehabilitation work on roads in Paron, the provincial capital, and the route linking Kunar with Nuristan was launched.

If their demand was not met, they would pitch camps in front of the Presidential Palace and MoPW in Kabul, the public representatives warned.

Provincial council head, Saadullah Payandazoy, told Pajhwok Afghan News the MoPW had promised them in the presence of President Ashraf Ghani that asphalting of the Kunar-Nuristan road would begin this solar year.

The ministry had also pledged asphalting all roads in Paron, he added, complaining the promises were yet to be kept and hence their decision to close the provincial council office.

Residents of the province also grumbled they were fed up with the non-implementation of government promises and apathy to Nuristan. They supported the step taken by the provincial council. 

A resident of Paron, Haji Mohammad Gul, said the provincial council’s closure was the demand of inhabitants who fully supported the move.

Nuristan Governor Hafiz Abdul Qayyum confirmed the MoPW had broken its pledges and said the provincial council’s decision was a legal way of protest.
