FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): Militants from the Islamic State (IS) group have shot dead 38 civilians in western Ghor province, local official said on Wednesday.

Security officials and residents of Ghalmin and Murghab area clashed with Daesh rebels after they tried to kidnap common people. As a result, three members of a local uprising group and one Daesh leader were killed.

A well-placed source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News 38 people -- mainly farmers and shepherds-- were taken hostage before being shot dead by the fighters after the killing of their key member.

Governor Abdul Nasir Khashe said initial investigation showed that Daesh insurgents killed 28 innocent people. He believed the death toll could soar.

Daesh has not yet commented on the incident.
