KABUL (Pajhwok): The railroad connecting the Aqina dry port in northern Faryab province with Turkmenistan was inaugurated by leaders of the two countries on Monday.
The inauguration ceremony for the railroad was held in Turkmenabat city on Monday. The railroad from the Imam.
In the second phase, the route would be extended by 80 kilomters in Turkmenistan and 300 kilometers into the northern provinces of Afghanistan.
According to the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), the road would be constructed by Turkmenistan. The route would be extended to the Andkhoi city of Faryab province in the near future.
MoPW officials estimate the cost of the construction process at about $350 million that would be paid by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
President Ashraf Ghani, who is on a visit to Turkmenistan, said the railroad represented a giant stride towards development, peace and prosperity.
Afghanistan and Turkmenistan already have good relations and the opening of the railroad would further boost cooperation between the two countries, he hoped.
The president added the railroad would bring more transport facilities to the region.The ministry says it was one of third railwayline connecting Afghanistan with its neighbours.Afghanistan is also connected through the rail route with Iran and Uzbekistan.
