Ghani lands in Balkh, briefed on security situation

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said 2015, when the enemies failed to achieve their nefarious designs, was a year of survival for the country.

On his return from a three-day visit to Turkmenistan, the president landed in northern Balkh province, where Governor Atta Mohammad Noor briefed him on the security situation.

Balkh was one of the peaceful provinces, Noor said, claiming the security forces had foiled multiple attempts by insurgents to spread anarchy and hamper the peace process in the province.

While commending the security forces’efforts to ensure normalcy in the province, the president said: “I came to Balkh to express solidarity with families of the people killed and injured in the recent suicide bombing.”

Ghani also met civil society, religious scholars and other influential figures. He heard their recommendations and suggestion on different issues.

A woman activist hailed Ghani’s endeavors to improve women’s situation and protect their rights. She acknowledged women had representation in all walks of lifein Balkh.

The president said his government had prepared a new package for imprisoned women, which would be announced on March 8. Efforts were being made to create new opportunities for women, including jobs.
