KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States has hailed the release of former Jawzjan governor Eng. Ahmad Ishchi from unlawful detention, calling for an independent investigation of his alleged mistreatment.
The detention and of Ishchi by First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum raised serious concerns, a statement from the US embassy said. “We would welcome the Afghan government’s move to swiftly investigate these allegations.”
It added an independent justice system is the cornerstone of every stable society. Afghans demanded that human rights be respected and the rule of law upheld, the embassy said, saying it stood with the Afghan people as they worked towards a prosperous future.
On Tuesday, the European Union (EU) also asked for a formal investigation into allegations of human rights violations and misuse of authority against Gen. Dostum.
Ishchi’s sons claim Dostum had a verbal clash with their father at the buzkashi ground in Shiberghan, the provincial capital. Later on, Dostum’s bodyguards allegedly kidnapped him.
