GHAZNI (Pajhwok): Taliban militants flogged more than a dozen people in two weeks over different ‘crimes’ in the Andar district of southern Ghazni province, residents said on Monday.
A Taliban fighter and a woman were lashed last week in Gabro area of Andar district over ‘illicit relationship,’ said a resident Rahimullah. “The girl was wrapped in a shawl, but she was crying loudly at the time of receiving lashes,” the resident, who witnessed the scene, said.
Another local resident, Lal Mohammad, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban recently flogged a couple in Kamalkhel area over running away from home. “Taliban hit the couple in front of thousands of people.”
He said another three persons were whipped by the rebels some time ago in Makro area on the accusation of stealing solar panels and other things from people’s homes.
In Ghazni City, the provincial capital, Jamshid, a resident, said yesterday the Taliban whipped five men, including one on adultery charge, 39-39 and 28-28 times each one in Qara Baghi area.
Ghazni police chief Brig. Gen. Amin Amarkhel confirmed the Taliban had whipped some people in Qara Baghi. “Taliban should implement Shariah first on themselves. Their actions contradict Islam.”
The Taliban have also confirmed the flogging events. Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said they whipped five persons — four on robbery charges and one accused of adultery — in Qara Baghi area.
He said a couple was whipped in Andar district over adultery but the male was not a Taliban fighter. He said the man’s cousins who were Taliban had been killed years ago. Mujahid said the fate of another couple, accused of running away from home, in Andar district was not yet decided by the court.
The rebels had previously whipped in public a number of people over various offenses in various parts of the country.
