JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At a well-attended gathering, Jalalabad Mayor Hamidullah Afghan briefed residents of the eastern city on last year’s achievements and plans for 2017.
Municipal district chiefs, influential figures, civil society representatives, poets, youth and municipality officials attended Thursday’s meeting in the provincial capital.
The mayor said hundreds of culverts, 50 concrete and 200 steel garbage cans, were constructed, more than 5km of roads graveled and some streets brick-lined last year.
Also, water streams were constructed in various municipal districts and a building for the 2nd municipal district constructed in the outgoing year.
He said 90 percent of asphalting work on eight kilometers of roads around the Shaheed Musa Shafiq and Baboryano parks and customers’ service centre had been completed. Other uplift works were also carried out by the municipality.
“To make the city green, we have sown nearly 15,000 plants. We have also constructed parks. This year, we plan to plant more than 20,000 saplings. For watering the plants, we will set up a modern irrigation system run by solar power.”
All departments of the municipality had been connected through the Internet now, Afghan said, adding a secure database had been established for the distribution of permits. The attendance system for government employees has been computerised.
“We have also destroyed a large quantity of expired and low-quality food and non-food items. We also buried the dead with no inheritors,” the mayor explained.
Afghan promised gravelling 10 kilometres of roads during the current fiscal year. Thousands of square metres of roads would be asphalted, parks constructed in Shanzada-Familio and other areas.
