Prolonged rain causes flood havoc in Farah

FARAH (Pajhwok): Dozens of homes, cattle and standing crops were washed away in flood triggered by heavy rains in the Gulistan district of western Farah province, the district chief said on Sunday.

Ajmal Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding caused no casualties but destroyed or partially damaged 45 homes in different parts of the district. He said about 100 sheep were killed and 30 tents of livestock owners were swept away in the flood.

He said 20 karez systems, 25 meadows and wheat and rice grown over 50 acres of land were damaged in the disaster that followed six days of consecutive raining.

The damages were caused in Ghorma, Laman, Gordang, Toot, Mughalabad, Jaghli, Shagorak, Khargai and Mullah Amir villages of the Gulistan district.

Calling for emergency aid to the affected families, Zahid said the damage in all the areas was yet to be assessed.

Natural Disasters Management Authority head in Farah Abdul Ghafoor Ayubi said they had received reports about areas reeling from the flooding.

He said the affected families were dire need of assistance and efforts in this regard were underway.
