JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Three children were killed when a mortar round they were playing with went off in eastern Nangarhar province on Monday, officials said.
The blast took place in Memli area of the Khogyani district, Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The mortar was lying in a water stream and exploded when the children started playing with it, Khogyani added.
Governor Gulab Mangal said he was shocked by the incident.
Hundreds of people suffer casualties every year due to unexploded ordnance left over from past wars.
