LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The governor on Saturday said the air force would hit vehicles smuggling precious stones and drugs in southern Helmand province.

Hayatullah Hayat was addressing a meeting about accountability of departments at the governor’s house in Lashkargah, the provincial capital.

Public works director Ahlullah Obaidi told the meeting that 401km of roads had been constructed in the province, but some were destroyed due to insecurity. He said work on the Greshk-Lashkargah and Greskh-Nowzad roads was in progress.

Electricity department head, Nasarullah Qanigh, said his department’s revenue increased by 15 perecnt compared to last year. A number of government agencies and civilians owed 291 million afghanis in unpaid electricity bills, he added.

Telecommunications department head, Obaidullah Zaheer, said telecom services had been suspended in some areas due security concerns. From 182 towers, only 100 towers were active currently, he added.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Raees Naim, the mines department head, said due security problems, majority of the mines were unprofessionally dug and smuggled to Pakistan.

He said the issue had been discussed with security authorities to take special security measures in the region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The governor said Taliban militants would be driven from the province. “After some time, all those vehicles smuggling precious stones and drugs to Pakistan will be bombed from the air to prevent the smuggling.”

A number of local residents told Pajhwok Afghan News that dozens of vehicles used to smuggle precious stones and drugs to Pakistan every day.
