FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Local officials said on Sunday most of historical sites and monuments in northeastern Badakhshan province were under threat of destruction from local strongmen.
Information and Culture Director Naqibullah Saqibyar told Pajhwok Afghan News Badakhshan had 5,000 years old history but the 30-year conflict had damaged historical sites there.
One site in Dasht-i-Khamchan, a desert located a kilometer west of the provincial capital, ran the risk of being damaged. “This desert was once invaded during the Genghis Khan era and the historic castle there was reconstructed later on.
