Public complaints: Ghani suspends Herat mayor

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has suspended the mayor for western Herat province, the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) said on Sunday.

A statement from IDLG the said Mayor Farhad Nayayesh had been suspended based on a decree from the president. Ghulam Ghays Nekbeen, deputy mayor, has been appointed as acting mayor.

Meanwhile, Nekbeen confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News he had received a formal letter from IDLG regarding his appointment. The mayor might return to work once he came back from Kabul, he believed.

IDLG spokeswoman Munira Yousafzada said many residents of Herat City had registered complaints against Nayayesh.

“Subsequently, we sent a delegation to Herat and shared the issue with the president based on our assessment. The president suspended the mayor,” she said, without giving details about the complaints.
