LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A US forces’ airstrike killed two Afghan Border Police (ABP) personnel and wounded three others in southern Helmand province, an official said on Saturday.

The governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News the US forces mistakenly targeted the ABP forces during an operation against militants in Loy Bagh and Dwa Lari area of the Nad Ali district.

He said several militants had also been killed in the attack but exact number of the casualties was not available.

The US forces in a statement confirmed the overnight operation and the ABP casualties in Helmand, saying the incident was being investigated.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of the ABP members affected by this unfortunate incident,” the US forces said in a statement.

The statement said fires during an ANDSF-US partnered operation resulted in the deaths and injuries to members of the Afghan Border Police.

Helmand police spokesman Abdul Salam Afghan said 17 Taliban were killed and seven others wounded during ground and air operations in Greshk and Garamser districts on Friday night.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the ABP personnel, who were clad in plain clothes, had been planning to ambush insurgents when they came under attack from US forces. He claimed more than 10 ABP men were killed and wounded.
