JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least seven Taliban have been killed and eight others wounded as a result of an air and ground operation in the Alingar district of eastern Laghman province, officials said on Tuesday.

Maj. Sherin Agha Faqiri, spokesman for 201 Selab Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants wanted to disturb the security situation in the district but faced strong resist from the security forces.

He said six fighters had been killed and six others wounded over the past 24 hours when the security forces carried out airstrike and a ground operation. He added the security personnel and civilians suffered no casualties.

Sarhadi Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the offensive and said a notorious commander named Azam Gul was among the dead. Gul was allegedly involved in terrorist attacks, planting roadside mines and other destructive activities.

He added seven civilians, who were currently under treatment at a local hospital, were wounded during a clash in Alishang district.

Elsewhere, Zwak said, one fighter loyal to Commander Abdul Hanif was killed and two others were wounded as a result of a clash between Taliban and security forces in Alingar on Monday.
