FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Local officials on Sunday said at least 16 people have been killed and 19 others wounded in recent flash floods in three districts of northeastern Badakhshan province.
Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) head for Badakhshan, Syed Abdullah Dehqan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the casualties occurred in Nasi, Shaki and Kufab districts.
Dehqan and Governor Ahmad Bekzad, at the head of a delegation, visited the affected families in the three districts and distributed some food and other essential items to them.
“ANDMA has paid the family of each victim 50,000 afghanis and 15,000 afghanis to each person injured in the floods,” he said, adding surveys by some organisations showed 249 houses were destroyed in 15 villages.
The governor’s spokesman, Nek Mohammad Nazari, said those displaced due to the floods were faced with lack of tents and other items. He promised the displaced families would be given essential items in near future.
The governor has ordered disaster committees in the districts to identify the losses inflicted on the displaced people and share their reports with the ANDMA committee.
