KABUL (Pajhwok): Security forces successfully recaptured Nawa district of southern Helmand province on Saturday besides inflicting heavy casualties on rebels, a statement from the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC) said.

Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) launched an operation yesterday for retaking the district; as a result dozens of Taliban militants were killed and wounded during the offensive conducted to drive the Taliban militants out of the district, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) was quoted as saying by the GMIC statement on Sunday afternoon.

Deputy spokesperson for MoD, Gen.Radmanish, during a presser at the GMIC said the ANDSF clearing operation was ongoing in the south and north parts of Nawa district aimed at completely cleaning the district of Taliban presence, it said.

It quoted Radmanish as saying the ANDSF were currently controlling Nawa district and were defusing mines and IEDs planted by Taliban to protect civilian lives.

He also stated the government would soon resume public services, besides opening clinics and schools in the district, it added.

Residents of the district were deprived of public services over the past one year due to the Taliban presence, the statement concluded.
