JALALABAD (Pajhwok): About 34 prisoners were released from the central jail in eastern Nangarhar province and sentences of another 12 reduced on Wednesday in compliance with a presidential order.
The prisoners were freed in the presence of the jail warden and the provincial attorney, Khel Orya, who told Pajhwok Afghan News the presidential decree had been issued on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Based on the order, the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) was authorised to free the prisoners and cut their jail terms. After approval from AGO, 34 inmates were released and terms of another 12 lessened.
According to him, the released individuals had been imprisoned for various crimes.
Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Abdul Wali Hesarak said a total of 1,600 people were held in the jail, including 23 women. He said all inmates received vocational and literacy training and religious teachings.
The released individuals, meanwhile, expressed happiness over their freedom, promising they would not commit crimes in future. Ashiqullah, jailed after a car accident, said he had no problem jail and received everything on time.
