KABUL (Pajhwok): Former President Hamid Karzai has condemned foreign forces airstrikes in central Logar province which resulted in the killing of innocent civilians, a statement from the ex-president office said on Thursday.

The former president termed the airstrikes a crime against humanity and act against international norms and conventions. He demanded immediate halt to the airstrikes conducted being carried out by foreign forces.

More than a dozen civilians and two senior Taliban figures were killed in a US airstrike in central Logar province on Wednesday morning.

Salim Saleh, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the airstrike was carried out during an operation codenamed “Khanjar” in Baraki Barak district and Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, this morning.

Governor Halem Fidae said the airstrikes were conducted when the Taliban commanders sought protection in civilians’ homes. Two Taliban commanders were killed in air raid, he added.

US forces in Afghanistan said on Thursday investigation into the alleged killing of civilians in foreign forces airstrikes has been launched.

In a statement the US forces stationed in Afghanistan said they were aware of an incident in the Pul-i-Alam, the capital of central Logar province, on Wednesday morning with potential civilian casualties.
