Police commander forcibly marries young woman

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Parents of a 21-year-old woman on Tuesday accused a local police commander of abducting and forcibly marrying their daughter in the Nahrain district of northern Baghlan province.

“Jan Agha kidnapped our daughter to an undisclosed location ten days ago,” said the woman's parents, who had come to the provincial capital to register their complaint with the police department.

A weeping Nasreen, mother of the victim, beseeched police officials to release her daughter from the commander's custody at the earliest possible. She also called for bringing the police officer to justice.

“We lived in the Taltal village of Baghlan-i-Markazee district before moving to Nahrain district as a result of conflict. There we became neighbours of Jan Agha. After some days, he asked for our daughter's hand, but we refused.”

She added after our response, Agha took her daughter with him and forcibly married her. The woman sought prompt justice from the provincial authorities.

Meanwhile, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Ikramuddin Sarey, said a manhunt had been launched for the commander. The police chief promised the accused would be arrested soon.
