KABUL/JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Thousands of people on Sunday protested against the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in Kabul, Nangarhar and Faryab provinces.

On Wednesday US President Donald Trump announced he was recognizing the contested city as the capital of Israel, triggering an almost universal backlash.

The president also ordered the shifting of the US Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The US is the world’s only country that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A dressing a protest gathering in Kabul on Sunday, Afghanistan People’s National Consensus party leader Mohammad Ibrahim Alokozai said Baitul Muqaddis was the first qibla of Muslims and any decision about the holy place rested with the Muslims.

Some 500 people attended the protest gathering and chanted death to Israel, US and Trump.

“The Mujahid nation of Afghanistan condemns the illegal and unfair decision of Trump. Baitul Muqaddis is our first qibla and an insult of the qibla means the insult of the whole of Muslims.”

He asked the Muslims across the world to stand united against the infidel world and resist the American decision.

Alokozai thanked President Ghani for slamming the US decision on behalf of the Afghanistan government and people and praised the Afghan security forces for their sacrifices in the defense of the country.

In eastern Nangarhar provinces, hundreds of seminary students staged a protest against the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The students from Najmul Madaris blocked the ring road against passengers on the Kabul-Torkham road in Behsud district.

They denounced Trump decision as unjust and unilateral and asked the Afghan government to cut off diplomatic ties with the US.

The angry mob also torched an effigy of President Trump and chanted “death to Trump, death to US and Israel.”

In northern Faryab province, religious scholars addressed thousands of people protesting against the US decision of recognizing Jerusalem as Israeli capital.

In their speeches, the clerics slammed the US decision as against international laws and insult to the Muslim world.

They asked the Afghan government to suspend ties with the US until the country reversed its decision of recognizing the contested city as Israel’s capital.
