MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Six children have been killed as a result of a landmine explosion in northern Balkh province, an official said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Sher Jan Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in Dawlatabad district on Wednesday evening.

He said the children -- aged seven to 11 years -- were killed when the bomb they were playing with went off. The explosive device had been planted by insurgents, he alleged

There has been no claim of responsibility for the explosion so far. Police had launched an investigation into the incident, Durrani concluded.
