1 US soldier killed, 4 wounded in Achin skirmish

KABUL, the US military said on Wednesday.

The fresh US casualties occurred in the Achin district of Nangarhar province on Jan. 1. Two of the wounded service members are under treatment at a nearby medical treatment facility.

A statement from the US military said the soldiers under treatment were in stable condition. The other service members had returned to duty. More information will be provided later on.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own,” said General John Nicholson, the top US commander in Afghanistan. “At this very difficult time, our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen and wounded brothers.”

Several ambushes and strikes have taken in recent months in Achin, lying near the Pakistan and Islamic State fighters have been active in the area.
