Acting mayor flees Zabul with 2m afghanis, says official

QALAT (Pajhwok): The acting mayor for southern Zabul province has fled the province with two million afghanis, an official alleged on Sunday.

Gul Islam Siyal, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News Mohammad Taib had been appointed as acting mayor six month ago.

Zabul’s new Governor Khyal Mohammad Hussaini, immediately after assuming charge, tasked a delegation with investigating administrative corruption in the municipality.

Siyal said the investigation found the acting mayor had stolen two million afghanis. The official is believed to have either decamped to Pakistan or is hiding somewhere in the country.

Security organs have launched a hunt for Taib, according to the spokesman, who promised the mayor would be brought to justice as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, other sources claim the mayor has embezzled three million afghanis.
