Above 1500 violence against women cases recorded in northeast

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The government has taken no action to curb crimes against women, rights officials said on Friday.

Fakhria Farogh, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) northeastern region office head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the past one year  saw 615 incidents of violence against women happening in Takhar, 582 in Kunduz and 338 in Baghlan provinces.

However, she said no action on the part of the government had been taken so far to arrest the perpetrators. She said despite arranging awareness creating programs in the three provinces this year, there had been no let-up in the crimes against women.

She lashed out at the government departments for failing to arrest even a single person accused of subjecting women to violence.

Yasmin Rasouli, a law student in Baghlan, said: “Besides the Women’s Affairs Ministry, there are many other organizations that work for women’s rights and empowerment, but none could bring about a considerable positive change in their lives.”

She said there were still many women who did not know about the government and so far no local and foreign organization had so far conducted any program to highlight women’s rights.

Yasmin believed if the government punished those involved in crimes against women, it would positively impact the situation of females.
