Ghani, CEO discuss peace, security, polls with Ursula

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah on Monday met with visiting German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen and discussed with her issues relating to security and the Afghan peace process.

Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kabul along with a delegation and members of the German Parliament and met with the president and the CEO in Kabul.

“Germany renews its commitment to NATO’s train and advise mission of Afghan security forces and more work in this regard,” she was quoted as saying in a statement from the Presidential Palace.

The minister hailed the Afghan government’s efforts for peace, stability, counterterrorism and implementation of mega projects.

She reaffirmed Germany’s support with Afghanistan in different areas including military and security areas. She also praised Afghan government’s efforts at brining about reforms in the security and defense sectors.

The president said: “Germany is Afghanistan’s close friend and we appreciate Germany’s continued support for Afghanistan particularly in security sector over the years.”

The German defense minister also met CEO Abdullah, according to a separate statement from his office. The CEO lauded Germany’s support towards Afghanistan and discussed with her the unity government’s strategies regarding security and elections.

The CEO said the unity government planned to conduct the parliamentary elections this new year. He said support to the Taliban from some countries and groups threatened peace in Afghanistan and prolonged the war in the country.
