CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): A ‘rabid’ dog bit 20 people within 24 hours in Sheikh Ali district of central Parwan province, panicking local residents, an official said Tuesday.

The victims included children, women and men, said Abdul Rauf Sarwari, technical and sectorial sector head of the district.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the suspected rabid dog bit 16 people last night and another four on Tuesday morning in Khak Ghulam Ali and Dehn Jangalat villages on the outskirts of the district center.

He said the victims included eight men, including children, and 12 women including girls.

He said the bitten individuals were provided initial treatment at the district clinic, but they were referred to the provincial civil hospital in Charkiar, the provincial capital, and Kabul for anti-rabies vaccination.

He said the vaccine was not available at the district clinic.

The civil hospital director confirmed receiving five people with dog bites and said that the victims had been given the anti-rabies vaccine.
