Afghan workers and their jobs are insecure, says Liaqat

KABUL Federation of Trade Unions (AAFTU).

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Dr. Mohammad Liaqat Adil felicitated workers and expressed unity with them on International Labour Day.

Referring to Monday’s twin suicide bombings in Kabul, Adil denounced the killing of 10 journalists in the line of duty.

“There is no security for labourers and their work. Whenever they desire, employers can fire them summarily,” the AAFTU chief remarked.

He termed the current situation of labourers in the country dangerous, asking the government to respect their rights. “We will not allow anyone to undermine the rights of labourers.”

Dr. Liaqat urged the insurgents to ensure the security of workers and avoid harming them. He complained of growing unemployment, reduction in wages, child labour, inflation and illiteracy.

Asked about AAFTU activities, Liaqat said his organisation advocated for the rights of labourers at all forums and listened to their voices.

With the repatriation of refugees to their homeland, he argued, unemployment had increased. He asked the government to pay more attention to the issue.

Dr. Liaqat also came hard on government policies, grumbling about AAFTU being locked out of events related to labourers’ wellbeing.
