MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents have captured a strategic area of the Balcharagh district of northwestern Faryab province, inflicting casualties on the security personnel, an official said on Tuesday.

Dadullah, an uprising group commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News militants launched a coordinated attack on the Gulian locality of the district late on Monday night. The firefight continued until 3:30am.

He said 10 security personnel were killed, 14 wounded and 30 others captured by the assailants as reinforcements could not reach in time and the area fell to the Taliban. He claimed fleeing Taliban’s captivity along with two bodyguards.

Abdul Jamil, the district administrative chief, confirmed the collapse of the strategic area and casualties. He said the insurgents had also suffered heavy casualties.

Sibghatullah Selab, the provincial council’s deputy chairman, said they had frequently urged spymaster Mohammad Masoom Stanikzai and the corps commander to secure the area but no measure had been taken so far.

According to local officials, Gulian area contains 10 villages and 20 security check-posts. Mohammad Tahir Rahmani, the provincial council chairman, also expressed concern over the collapse of the area.

He confirmed heavy casualties had been inflicted on the government forces and Taliban had captured a large quantity of weapons and ammunition from Dadullah, commander of the uprising group.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said Gulina had been captured in line with the movement’s annual spring offensive codenamed Al-Khandak.

He claimed many security personnel had suffered casualties in the overnight attack. Weapons and ammunition had also been seized by the rebels, he concluded.
